Biographical Note
Alice Fogel grew up with an interest in writing and reading during a childhood spent in Croton-onHudson, N.Y. She continued her interest in literature by receiving her bachelor’s degree in Art and
Literature from Antioch College. After college, she moved back to her home state to work in costuming
and design in the New York theater scene. A job with a Portsmouth theater company brought her to New
Hampshire and rekindled her interest in writing. Shortly after, she received a master’s degree in writing
from the University of New Hampshire. Fogel published her first book of poetry, Elemental, in 1993,
which earned a spot in the annual Best American Poetry anthology edited by David Lehman and Louise
Glück. Three years later, she published I Love This Dark World. Her 2007 book Be That Empty was
a National Poetry Society bestseller four weeks straight, and 2015’s Interval: Poems Based on Bach’s
“Goldberg Variations” received the Nicholas Schaffner Award for Music in Literature. Fogel has also
published a number of nonfiction works, including 2009’s Strange Terrain: A Poetry Handbook for the
Reluctant Reader.
