071 Deep Jungle Medical Post
Satah was one of the many deep jungle medical posts set up to deal with problems "on the spot" and to provide care and treatment for the local area. It was manned by trained Orang Asli Field Staff and was connected to Gombak Hospital by radio link. If a patient needed hospital attention he/she could be airlifted by helicopter to Gombak. This service was provided by UK, US, and Australian Air Forces. -

025 Decorated Woman
Women and men often decorate themselves just for fun with flowers, leaves, and pigments. This woman has put shredded fragrant leaves (probably from wild gingers [Zingiber spp.]) in her ear holes, a garland of flowers on her head, and has painted a line of white lime paste (obtained by trade) across her forehead. -
068 Girls shooting blowpipes 1
Both boys and girls practice blowpipe hunting from an early age. These girls have borrowed blowpipes from relatives (without asking) and are shooting at birds near camp. They were unsuccessful, but they had fun. -
033 Woman with blowpipe
Although men do most blowpipe hunting, some women, especially young ones without children, hunt for fun. This young woman was an active hunter. She had her own blowpipe, made by a male friend, but no dart quiver, so she stored her darts in her hair. Here she is carrying her blowpipe and two lengths of unprocessed blowpipe bamboo. -

The Women of Keene State: An Exploration through Personal Narratives "The Women of Keene State: An Exploration through Personal Narratives," is a digital humanities exhibit regarding how women shaped Keene State. This project incorporates stories through interviews with alumnae and faculty because of an interest in the narratives of women who have held a prominent role in the campus community for the last one hundred years. This project also displays archival information about fields of study which affected women students, such as the Home Economics program, and, later, the emergence of a Women's Study degree. The oral history is the most integral part of this project. So far, there are four interviews of women who attended or attend Keene State and their personal and family history in regards to the institution. This project is displayed on a WordPress site, in hopes that the work will be accessible to a variety of audiences through an accessible format.

Applying Group Theory to Peg Solitaire In this presentation, we will investigate the application of a branch of higher mathematics called group theory to peg solitaire. To play peg solitaire, a peg 'jumps' over an adjacent peg. The jumped peg is then removed from the board. The goal is to remove as many pegs from the board as possible, ideally all but one. We will use group theory to discover which holes are the sole possibilities for the last peg to be left at the end of the game. We will also explore algorithms for playing peg solitaire that guarantee only a single peg will remain. By studying the applications of group theory to seemingly simple games, we can gain a better appreciation of the beauty and uses of abstract mathematics.

Keene State College Open Education (OE) Project, Academic Year 2016-2017 Final Dissemination Assessment Report
Ten faculty members at Keene State College (KSC) participated in the AY 2016-2017 Open Education (OE) program. Four faculty utilized open educational resources (OER), in place of traditional textbook materials, in their courses. We asked these four faculty: “If you were to use a textbook in your course, which one would you use?” We used faculty’s responses to research the costs of the textbooks. We then multiplied the textbook cost by the courses’ student enrollments to obtain the maximum potential cost savings for each course. In other courses, faculty used an increased number of OERs and engaged students in open pedagogy practices that complemented, but did not entirely replace, the use of traditional textbooks. In one course, students were never required to purchase a traditional textbook in either the prior or the assessment semesters. -
Consultation and Community: The Relationship of Islam and Democracy Samuel Huntington argued in Clash of Civilizations (1993) that Western and Islamic worlds would clash in the new post-Cold War era due to Islam's resistance to western liberal democracy and its values. Generalizations such as these are one of the many reasons why westerners are both anxious and attracted to the Middle East; however, the generalizations are founded on a selective analysis of evidence. This paper will demonstrate that Islam is not hostile towards democracy. The ideal Islamic State, as well as the central values of Islam are quite democratic in their nature. Empirical evidence rebukes Huntington's thesis, however, research on Islamic political thought is somewhat lacking in western scholarly circles. Instead of focusing on how the U.S. can make Islamic governments in its own image, research should be directed at understanding the political values of Islam and how they can be incorporated within a democratic framework.

Financialization and Its Effects on Economic Growth: Hobbled by Deregulation? In the aftermath of the unprecedented global financial collapse in 2008, the public remains skeptical of financial institutions. Much of the lead-up to this crisis has its roots in the steady expansion of the financial sector in highly-developed economies. This transformation has seemingly permanently shifted the economic landscape of nonfinancial businesses towards unproductive financial investments. Using macroeconomic data for 217 countries, this study tests the hypothesis that financial development has a negative effect on average GDP growth post-2008 by employing OLS regression estimation. While controlling for additional influences on growth such as education, inflation, private investment, and government expenditure, the study's preliminary results indicate that the rise of finance has impaired growth. Further testing utilizes OECD country data in a time-series model measuring financialization over the period between 1980-2015. Extracting from these models the estimated effect of financialization will help guide policy concerning the regulation of the financial sector.
