She is cutting the stalk into 4 - 5" pieces which will later be planted. The young boy is her son Hamit and the young girl is Serebum's sister's child. Ladang. 307

Note flowers in her hair, bare breasts, beads worn draped over one breast = all frequently seen with Semai women. Note her squatting position - she is not sitting on the ground. Ladang. 306.

Walking in the river On reverse: April, 1962. Kampong Jinteh - Semai. 241. Three women and a man walking up the River Jinteh to go fishing. The women will use the baskets they carry called senqein. Note the dog accompanying them. Frequently dogs will hunt out a frog.

Girl looking for fish On reverse: April, 1962. Kampong Jinteh - Semai. 239. This child is a girl about 10 named Perankub, she is in the small river Jinteh. She has lifted a tubular piece of wood out of the water and is looking in it for fish. One of the less effective ways of fishing. Note the bulge in the back of her sarong: she is carrying tobacco and leaves for making cigarettes.
