- Research on incidence of concussions in ice hockey is not specific to the level of competition (NCAA divisions I, II, III or Club). Other factors that lack research are type of face-shield used, athlete position, and whether medical staff is present during play. We conducted a survey to address this lack of information. Participants in the study consisted of men?s collegiate ice hockey players from the University of New Hampshire, Franklin Pierce University, Plymouth State University, and Keene State College ice hockey teams between the ages of 18-24. Athletic trainers from each school were contacted and ask to report concussions, athlete position, type of face-shield, and presence of medical staff using a standardized form. Chi-squared analyze determined if any significant relationships exist between concussion incidence, level of competition, type of face-shield position and presence of on-site medical staff.
