Thiosemicarbazone Derivatives of Europium and Samarium

- Thiosemicarbazones are a class of organic molecules that have been shown to have biological activity, such as anti-tumor activity when they are bound to a metal. Previous research has studied thiosemicarbazones attached to palladium or platinum, but far less research has investigated using lanthanides as the metal center. Lanthanides like europium and samarium are rare earth elements and when bound to an organic molecule they may have interesting properties such as the ability to fluoresce or to be used as medical resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agents. Here, we report the initial results on the synthesis and activity of these new molecules.
