- The goal of this research is to examine the use of 3, 4 Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) in the treatment of persons with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Preliminary trials using MDMA with persons with severe symptoms of PTSD are associated with significant improvement in quality of life areas. Methods included a search of Ebsco Host, Medline, and Pubmed databases of key literature searches of MDMA and PTSD, which yielded 36 articles. Findings indicated that MDMA in combination with psychotherapy was effective in treating PTSD in comparison to current treatment methods. Specific brain regions and neurotransmitter systems associated with fear extinction learning and personality re-organization were supported. Conclusions indicate that further clinical trials may be useful to Gulf War veterans who experience disproportionate rates of PTSD and high rates of co-occurring substance abuse disorder and suicide.
