Factoring Quartic Polynomials: A Lost Art
Item
- Description
- David F. Putnam Science Center, Room 102
- Determining procedures for finding solutions to polynomial equations has long been an important pursuit in the study of mathematics. One example, introduced in most high school algebra courses, is the method for solving quadratic equations also known as the quadratic formula. Less well known are procedures for solving cubic and quartic polynomial equations. This talk will focus on the factoring techniques needed to solve quartic polynomial equations of the form 0 = x^4 + cx^2 + dx + e
