- Electronic cigarettes have increased in popularity over the past few years and are marketed as a less harmful alternative to cigarettes. This project characterizes locally prepared vaporizable e-liquids that typically contain dissolved nicotine and other flavor components. A method is being developed to quantify nicotine in various commercial products and to screen for characteristic chemicals in different flavorings. Measurements are made using Gas Chromatography - Mass Spectrometry, an analytical technique that separates gas phase chemicals and identifies components according to their mass. The instrument is configured for rapid, selective, and sensitive analysis of nicotine and is capable of measuring levels below 1 microgram/milliliter. Accurate quantitative determinations are accomplished using density measurements and a calibration curve. Data will be presented to compare quantitative results of nicotine concentrations, to confirm that nicotine-less products are absent of nicotine, and to present qualitative chemical profiles for different flavorings.
