- David F. Putnam Science Center, Room 282
- This study examines 'revenge porn', a new social phenomenon involving the sharing of nude/risque photos with a third party, without the consent of the subject. This behavior has become more prevalent due to mobile technologies, and has yet to be studied from a sociological perspective. This research thus provides insight into the prevalence of and attitudes toward 'revenge porn' in the U.S. Participants in this study were recruited through convenience and snowball sampling and data were collected utilizing a web-based survey. Early results suggest victims of 'revenge porn' are mostly female; males and females both sext in significant numbers; and people expect a high level of privacy when exchanging sexts and generally hold victim blaming attitudes towards 'revenge porn' victims. This research will provide a unique sociological perspective concerning 'revenge porn' behavior and motivations and, ideally, will aid in developing legislation aimed at prosecuting offenders and protecting victims.
