- The goal of this research is to examine the health risks associated with cannabis use among early adolescents. A literature search was conducted using Psychinfo, Ebsco Host, and Pubmed databases using the key search terms cannabis use, adolescents and brain development. The search yielded 41 articles. Findings indicate cannabis use among early adolescents is associated with significant health risks to brain development and brain connectivity such as significantly disrupt grey and white connections between cortical and limbic regions in the brain resulting in cognitive impairments, affect dysregulation, and impulsive behavior. Results indicate that cannabis use by adolescents may be creating significant challenges to society. These results are particularly troubling given the increased potency of cannabis and increased rate of the use by adolescents in recent years, as well as the low societal perceptions of the harm cannabis may cause.
