- The purpose of this study is to observe how caffeine affects performance on a reading comprehension test within the college population. Volunteers will be given a comprehension test on two practice SAT reading comprehension passages and a pre- and post- mood test. These tests will assess if caffeine affects their overall mood and comprehension. Participants will be given either 0mg, 50mg, or 100mg of caffeine dissolved in 3 oz of soy milk. Participants will not be informed which amount they will be given. It is expected that the 100 mg dose will produce the best recall scores followed by the 50 mg dose and then placebo. Mood scores are expected to show an increase in nervousness with an increase of caffeine ingestion. The findings of this study will shed light on whether the use caffeine by students to boost performance in college is an effective study strategy.
