Let's Have a Chat: Improving Speech Patterns Among Individuals with Autism
Item
- Description
- David F. Putnam Science Center, Room 175
- This project aims to improve social language skills among individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) through a novel iPad training app, SpeechMatch. Participants received 20 hours of speech training using SpeechMatch over the course of 10 sessions along with a pre- and post- Behavioral Test (BAT), which utilizes a rating scale to assess communication skills levels for a five minute free conversation. The results of the BAT have shown that the skills gained during the training can transfer into 'real world' situations. Through this project, we hope to contribute an accessible tool for the ASD community. In a panel discussion, we will discuss the theory behind the development of the SpeechMatch app, the methodology and results of the study, and student perspectives on the research culture in the Keene State College community. We will also share our experience as student researchers in the federally funded NH-INBRE network.
