The Charles Wilcox Papers belong to the Keene, New Hampshire resident who was a Union soldier during the Civil War and was captured and imprisoned in Confederate internment camps as well as prisons from 1864-1865. These papers include Wilcox’s diary, correspondence, and official documents. The papers are part of the archival holdings of the Historical Society of Cheshire County in Keene, New Hampshire, and were included as part of the NH Citizens Archivists' Initiative.
On reverse: Detail of Semai house (4). Another view of S's old house. Bamboo water tubes are stacked in one corner. A backbasket (raga') lies on the floor. A water gourd (labu' teio, Lagenaria vulgaris; also called labu' s l in a a cultivar whose fruit and leaf are eaten) is on a shelf in the background. Seed maize hangs from the rafters. An earthen hearth is in the right foreground.
On reverse: Aboriginal dog. This jackal-colored dog is of the breed owned by the Semai aboriginally, although this specimen belongs to the Orang Laut, another group of Malayan aborigines.
On reverse: Goat house (3) A side view of the second goat house. Notice the wing on the house in background. Such wings are a frequent feature of Semai houses in this area, representing an intermediate form between the longhouses of the Temiar to the north and the nuclear family. one-pitch houses of Perak.
