KEENE STATE COLLEGE 2008-2009 COURSE PROPOSAL HNRSTW 101– Honors Thinking and Writing DATE OF SUBMISSION: February 2009 SPONSORING PROGRAM AND CHAIR: Honors Program Director: Dr. Helen Frink Proposal Sponsor: Helen Frink PROPOSED ACTION Course Addition PROPOSED COURSE NUMBER and/or TITLE: HNRSTW 101– Honors Thinking and Writing PROPOSED COURSE DESCRIPTION: HNRSTW 101 Introduces students to skills and ways of thinking essential to intellectual inquiry. Students will pose a creative and complex question; investigate it with critical analyses of reading, research, and data; and use appropriate research techniques and documentation to produce a substantial writing project. Prerequisite: Admission to the College Honors Program. LEARNING OUTCOMES: Students will demonstrate the ability to • develop and support complex perspectives, positions, or arguments. • use revision effectively as part of the writing process. • use grammar and organization to effectively communicate ideas. • reflect upon and take responsibility for their continuing development as writers RATIONALE: It is essential that students in the Honors Program be introduced to an intensive writing, research and critical thinking course. The HNRSTW course provides students the opportunity to develop academic skills fundamental to academic success. Topics will be drawn from present ITW offerings. If a new topic is proposed it will go through the curriculum review process, seeking approval from the Honors Program Advisory Council, the Senate Curriculum Committee, and the College Senate. RESOURCES: All full-time tenure-track faculty who have participated in the ITW training process will be invited to teach this course.
