Special attention will be given to questions about how discovery and conquest shaped Europeans’ images of themselves and their own cultures. Occasionally. LEARNING OUTCOMES: In this course, students will be expected to consider the complex interactions between peoples and cultures, and the importance of cultural differences in the historical construction of relationships of power. Students will use the critical thinking tools of a historian to analyze primary and secondary sources to identify discursive practices that establish and sustain distinctions of the Self and Other. Students will demonstrate their mastery of these skills through in-class presentations and formal writing assignments. RATIONALE: In this course students will have the opportunity to explore European history in a broader geographical and cultural context, as the history of Europe’s interactions with non-European peoples and cultures.
