Authors may include Frederick Douglass, Harriet Jacobs, Richard Wright, Ralph Ellison, Sherley Ann Williams, Toni Morrison, and Zora Neale Hurston. Prerequisites: ITW 101 and one 200-level English course. Fall. PROPOSED (NEW) COURSE TITLE: Studies in African American Literature Studies Af Am Lit PROPOSED (NEW) COURSE DESCRIPTION: ENG 345 Studies in African American Literature Examines literary traditions of African-American cultural practitioners including relations between oral and literary works, performance and reading, tradition and innovation. Texts by Black writers from the 18th-, 19th- and 20th-centuries are read in conversation with those from the contemporary moment. Prerequisites: ITW 101 and one 200-level English course. Annually. LEARNING OUTCOMES: NA RATIONALE: This course used to be called “Black American Literature.” Now that the English department is offering a new IS course at the 200-level called “Readings in African American Literature and Culture” we need the catalog to reflect that this important subject matter is available to English majors as a 300-level course that builds on IIENG245. The title “Studies” reflects departmental practice with other 300-level offerings. RESOURCES: Will be taught by Prof. Michael Antonucci. No new resources needed.
