KEENE STATE COLLEGE 2008-2009 COURSE PROPOSAL FORM DATE OF SUBMISSION: 29 September 2008 SPONSORING PROGRAM AND CHAIR: MUSIC Joseph Darby, Chair, Music, jdarby@keene.edu, 358-2140 PROPOSAL SPONSOR Jose Lezcano, Professor of Music, jlezcano@keene.edu, 358-2180 PROPOSED ACTION: Course Replacement CURRENT COURSE NUMBER, TITLE and DESCRIPTION: MU 112 Latin American Music PROPOSED COURSE NUMBER and/or TITLE: IAMU 112 Latin American Music Survey PROPOSED COURSE DESCRIPTION: A cultural, social, and historical survey of Latin American folk and art music which emphasizes African, European, and Amerindian roots of representative regional and national styles. Students learn through readings, lectures, films, listening, and performance on indigenous instruments. Fall. ISP PERSPECTIVES OUTCOMES – 1. Critically and creatively engage in the aesthetic and intellectual components of the fine and performing arts. ISP INTEGRATIVE OUTCOMES – By the end of this course a student who attends, participates, and completse assignments and exams in satisfactory manner will be able to: 1. Diversity - Recognize how differences shape approaches to identity, knowledge, and power. 2. Global Issues - Demonstrate an understanding of non-western cultures from the context of those cultures. ISP SKILLS OUTCOMES – 1. Reading • Read with an awareness of purpose • Demonstrate the ability to summarize and identify key points 2. Writing • Write with purpose • Organize, state, and develop ideas clearly • Incorporate research appropriately 3. Critical Thinking • Synthesize information, arguments, and perspectives in order to create new meaning, insight, and understanding RATIONALE: Latin American Music has served the needs of students in the Spanish major as a program requirement, of music majors as an option to fulfill requirements in the BA and BM programs, and of the general student population as a general education course. It is being revised to meet the needs of the college and to meet the requirements of the Integrative Studies Program. RESOURCES: No new faculty resources required.
