Abstract

This workshop will explain and demonstrate an engineering design process that engages elementary school students in critical thinking and problem solving strategies. Creativity and problem solving skills are central to engineering. Participants will learn how elementary school students are taught to work collaboratively using an engineering process to solve authentic problems for different clients. Participants will learn how one group of students designed their own warning device to guide a ship into harbor using their knowledge of light reflection. Another group of students trace energy back to the sun using the contents of owl pellets to make a claim supported by evidence. In this workshop participants will be invited to work with others to solve a problem for a client using an engineering process given by the presenters.
